They’re here — the Christmas ads we’ve been waiting all year for. 2020’s offering features a loo roll snowman, a box of tricks, and a side of sausage roll crisps.
From heartstring tuggers to festive feel goods, we’ve picked out our favourites. See which are in our spotlight, below.
THE ONE THAT MAKES US CHUCKLE
TESCO: NO NAUGHTY LIST
For 2020, Tesco’s binned Santa’s naughty list. After the tough year we’ve had, we all deserve to treat ourselves.
The ad shows people worrying about the things that might’ve put them on the naughty list: buying too many loo rolls, forgetting to sing Happy Birthday when washing their hands, and not donating to Captain Tom. A brilliant way of referencing COVID without bringing down the tone.
THE ONE THAT GETS US IN THE FEELS
MCDONALD’S: INNER CHILD
Be warned. This one’s a tear-jerker.
A mum’s trying to spend quality time with her son over Christmas, but he’s stuck in his digital bubble. Deep down he wants to join in, but keeps pushing his feelings away. Those with teens in the family, this might well feel close to home.
In a pivotal turning point, his mum starts a snowball fight in a last attempt to have some festive fun. He frees his inner child and the film comes to a close with them cuddled up on the sofa. Just what Christmas is all about.
THE ONE THAT BRINGS MAGIC TO LIFE
ARGOS: AN EVENING WITH ABRACADAISY & THE INCREDIBLE LUCY
Circling toys in the infamous Argos catalogue was a Christmas staple for most of us when we were younger. Although this may feel like a lifetime ago, our memories have been brought to life with Argos’ 2020 Christmas ad.
AbracaDaisy and The Incredible Lucy transform their living room into an auditorium, performing a magic show for their family with their box of tricks. Talk about finishing with a bang!
THE ONE THAT HAS US SINGING ALONG
WALKERS: A SAUSAGE CAROLL
LadBaby, clad in a sausage roll Santa suit and carrying a sack full of limited edition crisps, goes door-to-door caroling for Walkers’ 2020 humorous Christmas ad. If you look close enough, you might even spot the Coca-Cola and Love Actually references.
Joined by special guests: Tony Mortimer, Aled Jones, Carol Smillie, Roxanne Hoyle, and Gary Lineker, the group put their twist on a Christmas classic. It’s catchy. You’ll have it stuck in your head all day.
‘Ohhhhh sausage rolllllll flavour crisps…’
THE ONE THAT’S OUR TOP RATED
AMAZON: THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Setting the bar high this year, Amazon puts a ballerina with big dreams center stage to a new arrangement of ‘The Show Must Go On’ by Queen.
After being awarded with the main part in the show, COVID-19 results in the show being cancelled. Feeling heartbroken, her family come up with a solution — a magical street showcase. They order spotlights from Amazon and neighbours spectate from their windows. Truly wonderful.
