Celebrating businesses both big and small, the Hull Business Awards take to the stage at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull each year.

For the third year running, we’ve worked with Reach plc and Hull Live on 15 films that showcase the finalists. Want to know the process behind the production? Keep scrolling.

DISCOVERY

Starting with style, we sat down and visualised what we wanted the films to look like. We created a moodboard by searching for inspiration and looking at current trends.

Next up: strategy. We organised everything that goes on behind and in front of the camera — we’re talking crew, equipment, and a filming schedule.

To get the finalists camera-ready, we briefed them on the filming requirements, covering all aspects of the production process. We recognised the questions which would get us the most relevant answers, including: a business overview, reasons for nomination, and how it feels to be a finalist.

CREATION

Strategy in place? Cue the production.

Our camera crew filmed a whopping 39 interviews over 10 days, getting to know businesses from a range of industries, such as: marketing & design, events, IT & software, and construction.

To make sure we captured shots relevant to the spoken content, we filmed the interviews first, followed by the supporting footage (b-roll). Branding shots were a key focus, setting the businesses apart from one another.

Onto the edit. With a super tight turnaround, we had four editors crafting a total of 15 films — one for each award. We cut down the content, selecting only the most relevant interview soundbites to lead the narrative, which was then supported by the b-roll.

For the soundtrack, we searched for something that’d compliment the visual style of the films, whilst also being suitable for the tone of the evening. Moving onto graphics, we looked at current trends, taking inspiration from editorial media, to craft an aesthetic that was both on-brand with the awards, and visually striking.

DELIVERY

The final stage. The films were transferred to our interactive review platform, ready for the client to watch and add feedback. Once given the green light, they were uploaded to the awards presentation.

Celebrating weeks of solid filming and editing, we suited up and headed to the awards ceremony to see our films in action.

HBA BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

TESTIMONIAL

In response to our successful partnership with Reach plc, Jane Smallwood, Head of Event Management, said:

“We contracted Northern Visuals to produce the finalists videos for our annual Hull Live Business Awards. The videos were slick, contemporary, engaging and kept our guests captivated throughout the event.

We’ve received many positive comments regarding the quality of the videos, many of the finalists have requested the films to put on their own site or to use on their social channels – this is a great testament to how good they were.

The team at Northern Visuals were a pleasure to deal with, highly professional and full of ideas.”
